Drug class
Active ingredient: glibenclamide
- SulfonylureasATC code: A10BB01Source: ATC
Allergy cross-reactivity
Cross-reactivity between sulfonamide antibiotics and non-antibiotic sulfonamides
Risk level: Low
Basis: MYTH-BUSTING: Non-antibiotic sulfonamides (thiazide/loop diuretics, sulfonylureas, acetazolamide, celecoxib) LACK the N1 ring and N4 arylamine group. Strom NEJM 2003 shows any association reflects general allergy predisposition, not true cross-reactivity. Risk is LOW.
Other active ingredients in the same group:
- acetazolamide
- celecoxib
- furosemide
- gliclazide
- hydrochlorothiazide
Notes: A reported sulfa allergy should NOT automatically contraindicate non-antibiotic sulfonamides. In severe reaction history still exercise caution. Consult a specialist.
