celecoxib
Drug class
Active ingredient: celecoxib
- CoxibsATC code: M01AH01Source: ATC
Allergy cross-reactivity
Selective COX-2 inhibitors / safe alternative
Risk level: Low
Basis: Selective COX-2 inhibitors spare COX-1 and are generally tolerated in COX-1-mediated NSAID hypersensitivity. Paracetamol is a weak COX inhibitor, likewise generally tolerated.
Other active ingredients in the same group:
- etoricoxib
- paracetamol
Notes: Generally tolerated but never absolutely safe; a minority still react (celecoxib ~10%). Confirm by a specialist.

Risk level: Low
Basis: MYTH-BUSTING: Non-antibiotic sulfonamides (thiazide/loop diuretics, sulfonylureas, acetazolamide, celecoxib) LACK the N1 ring and N4 arylamine group. Strom NEJM 2003 shows any association reflects general allergy predisposition, not true cross-reactivity. Risk is LOW.
Other active ingredients in the same group:
- acetazolamide
- furosemide
- glibenclamide
- gliclazide
- hydrochlorothiazide
Notes: A reported sulfa allergy should NOT automatically contraindicate non-antibiotic sulfonamides. In severe reaction history still exercise caution. Consult a specialist.

Cross-reactivity risk is not definitive; consult an allergy/infectious disease specialist.
